I am new to HR. Is this program for me?
We recommend that students without HR experience take Fundamentals of Human Resources Management.
If I have an MBA and/or extensive management experience can I take this course?
Yes. If you have corporate management experience or manage employees in a small business, this course will allow you to increase education and your marketability in the business world by providing you with the tools to avoid potential liability for your company, to know about employee confidentiality, ethics issues, and to effectively hire, manage, and terminate employees.

What are SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certifications?
Once you have achieved a level of expertise as a HR practitioner, you may want to go on for certification in the HR field, either the SHRM-CP (SHRM Certified Professional) certification or SHRM-SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional) certification. You must meet the SHRM requirements to sit for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certifications. These exams are offered separately from our program through the Society of Human Resource Management. Where and when are these exams offered?
All SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams are computer-based. The exams will be administered at Prometric testing centers across the United States during two annual windows: May 1 – July 31 and December 1 – February 28. Students will know if they passed or failed the exam before leaving the testing center.
Is this program primarily test preparation for these certification exams?
This program is for the individual who wants more knowledge, professional development, and for the one who is preparing for certification. Instructors do not “teach to the test.” They do not provide test questions that will be on the course final exam or on a certification exam. Instructors provide an overview of the SHRM Learning System material. It is the student’s responsibility to study all of the material in order to perform well in the program.
Does one have to pass the final exam in the KSU HR Certificate program in order to take certification exams?
You do not have to pass our program to take certification exams. However, performance in our program is a good indicator of performance on any certification exam.
How is “demonstrated HR experience” defined?
If your title is not on the approved position list, you must demonstrate that your activities are at the professional (exempt level) and at least 51% of your daily activities are within the HR function, OR you have direct supervision of those who deliver HR services.
What is the definition of “professional level” work?
Professional-level work means experience that includes activities in which you work independently in planning and decision-making. In-depth work requirements, (data gathering, analysis, and interpretation), interactions with a broad spectrum of contacts (including decision makers) and ultimate responsibility for your work.
Can students take the SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP exam?
Students will not be able to take the SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP exam unless they meet the SHRM eligibility requirements.
My bachelor’s (or master’s) degree is not in HR. Does that matter?
No, you do not have to have an HR degree to be eligible to take the SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP exam. However, because the exams are both experience- and knowledge-based, your specific area of study can make a difference in your performance.
If I want to recertify by retaking the exam, do I need to meet the SHRM eligibility requirements?
Yes, if you are currently certified and wish to recertify by taking the exam, you will have to meet the SHRM eligibility requirements.
