Your Guide to Summer University

Your Guide to Summer University

Slime, STEM, chocolate chip pancakes and a LEGO here and there — this is Summer University. This extraordinary camp experience takes place June and July of each year. With more than 70 camps to choose from, there is never a shortage of excitement.

Whether you are new to SummerU or returning for the third (or fourth time), we wanted to provide a comprehensive guide to help navigate your experience. We strive to enhance this experience each year, so learn something new and share with your friends as you prepare for an incredible summer full of new experiences and interactive learning.

SummerU Teen CampersWhat does the fee for each camp cover?

Our camps are created with education and fun at the forefront, and we hire instructors to develop engaging and scholastic activities. We also employ 40+ camp assistants whose responsibilities including running our check-in and checkout procedures, facilitating logistics throughout the day such as lunch and bathroom breaks, and supporting the needs of our SummerU team throughout the seven weeks of camps. Additionally, our diverse camp offerings such as LEGO Robotics and  Junior Chefs Academy all require supplies to ensure your child has the most appealing experience possible. Last, each camper will receive a SummerU T-shirt each Friday.

Can my child get college credit? It’s called University, right?

Although we have camps designed for high school seniors, we do not offer college credit. Camps are held at the university and are designed to stimulate learning and creativity. However, each participant will receive a one-of-a-kind certificate from KSU which they can frame and showcase to their friends.

LEGO Robotics Camp

Is there a playground?

No, but you might find us outside doing science experiments or going on a scavenger hunt utilizing geocaching technology. Inside, students will be creating unique artwork and comic books and whipping up meals and desserts in the kitchen.

SummerU Outdoors

Do you bus children to camps? Are there overnight camps?

Parents/guardians must arrange transportation for their children to come to Summer University. Our camps are held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I work during those hours – what are my options for early dropoff and late pickups?

We’ve got you covered: Before Care (7:30-9 a.m.) and Extended Care (3-6 p.m.) are designed just for you (additional fees apply). Our SummerU staff will be ready for you!

Are meals served? What if my child has allergies?

Campers must bring a sack lunch each day, and we have designated lunch times for each group. This is a fun time where campers get to interact with each other (and probably swap some lunch goodies)! We do serve snacks during Extended Care. Our Authorization and Waiver Form has a section for parents to identify allergies and our team utilizes this information.

Chef Gerstenecker with Culinary Camper

Who are the people leading these camps? Are they qualified to instruct my child(ren) on topics like culinary and science?

Of course! Just like our instructors for our professional certificate programs are subject matter experts, so are our camp leaders. For example, our cooking camps are taught by Robert Gerstenecker, an award-winning chef who also teaches our Culinary Apprenticeship students. Science teachers develop camps such as Mini Medical Academy, Plants and Minerals, and EcoAdventures. From Art Extravaganza to Just Dance, your children will be taught by those who know the material inside and out.

Art CamperHow do you ensure my child’s safety?

Every day, parents (or designees per the Authorization and Waiver Form) are required to sign their children in and out of SummerU. Photo identification is required. Children also wear an identifying wristband, provided each day. We have a security guard on site, and KSU’s Police Department is just a phone call away. Officers also frequent our building and patrol our parking lot.

SummerU really is the total package! So, where can I see photos and videos of camps?

Glad you asked! Like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram and Twitter! Contact us and we can also add you to our email list.
