Futures Frequently Asked Questions

Programs | Frequently Asked Questions | Contacts

Q. What’s the difference between a certificate program and a college degree?
A. Certificate training programs directly teach professional skills in a shorter amount of time than a college degree program. Some fields require more philosophical knowledge and education (like psychology or English), which takes years of study in both that field/major and in general core classes like Chemistry, World Literature and others. Those subjects are best studied in a college degree program. Others are more skill related (like web design or EKG technician) and only require training in those particular skills. These careers are better suited to certificate programs.

Q. How soon can I get a job?
A. Some Futures training programs can be completed in as few as 13 weeks, and then you will be ready to seek employment. Others like Kennesaw Internet Professional (KIP), the Paralegal Studies program and the Culinary Fast-Track Apprenticeship Program for chefs can take 10 to 12 months to complete. All Futures training programs can be completed in one year or less. Then you will be ready for employment in that field.

Q. What financial aid is available for training programs?
A. While the Georgia Hope Scholarship does not pay for certificate programs, there are some financial aid opportunities through student loans and other avenues. The KSU Futures program has financial aid representatives who can talk with students about options for investing in a career training program. Because certificate programs are much shorter in length and require less time in class every week, students can work while attending training and will be finished and earning a paycheck in a few months.

Q. How do I get started?
A. Contact Continuing Education at Kennesaw State University at 770-423-6765 to learn when the next course begins and register over the phone, online at www.kennesaw.edu/ConEd or in person at KSU Center in Kennesaw. You will be guided through getting books and materials needed for your course at the KSU Center book store. Then come to the first class ready to begin life after high school. Some programs have regularly scheduled free public information sessions to explain details of the program. Program managers are always available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to talk with prospective students and their parents.
